چکیده

Studies of first-order phase transitions through the use of the exact renormalization group are reviewed. In the first part the emphasis is on universal aspects: We discuss the universal critical behaviour near weakly first-order phase transitions for a three-dimensional model of two coupled scalar fields – the cubic anisotropy model. In the second part we review the application of the exact renormalization group to the calculation of bubblenucleation rates. More specifically, we concentrate on the pre-exponential factor. We discuss the reliability of homogeneous nucleation theory that employs a saddle-point expansion around the critical bubble for the calculation of the nucleation rate.

Exact renormalization-group analysis of first-order phase transitions in clock models.

We analyze the exact behavior of the renormalization group flow in one-dimensional clock-models which undergo first order phase transitions by the presence of complex interactions. The flow, defined by decimation, is shown to be single-valued and continuous throughout its domain of definition, which contains the transition points. This fact is in disagreement with a recently proposed scenario f...

Analytical Solutions of Exact Renormalization Group Equations

We study exact renormalization group equations in the framework of the effective average action. We present analytical solutions for the scale dependence of the potential in a variety of models. These solutions display a rich spectrum of physical behaviour such as fixed points governing the universal behaviour near second order phase transitions, critical exponents, first order transitions (som...

The Electroweak Phase Transition through the Renormalization Group

We study the high-temperature phase transitions for the Abelian and SU(2) Higgs models, using the exact renormalization group. The evolution equation for a properly-defined coarse-grained free energy is solved. The phase diagram of the Abelian Higgs model has a region of second-order phase transitions governed by fixed points, for which we calculate critical exponents and crossover curves. It a...

Renormalization-Group Study of Weakly First-Order Phase Transitions

We study the universal critical behavior near weakly first-order phase transitions for a three-dimensional model of two coupled scalar fields – the cubic anisotropy model. Renormalization-group techniques are employed within the formalism of the effective average action. We calculate the coarse-grained free energy and deduce the universal ratio of susceptibilities on either side of the phase tr...

Ground-state phase diagram of SÄ1 XXZ chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy

One-dimensional S51 XXZ chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy are studied by numerical exact diagonalization of finite-size systems. The numerical data are analyzed using conformal field theory, the level spectroscopy, phenomenological renormalization-group, and finite-size scaling method. We thus present a quantitatively reliable ground-state phase diagram of this model. The ground s...
